Since Nalco was formed (National Aluminium Company) in , as an Orissa-integrated company based on mining Panchpat Mali, there have been repeated attempts by other mining companies to gain access to most of the other bauxite-capped mountains in this region. Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, U.P. and Rajasthan are also reported to have some bauxite deposits. The production of bauxite has increased rather out of proportion from a mere 68 thousand tonnes in to a staggering quantity of 9, thousand tonnes in recording an increase of over times in a span of about half a century.
Bauxite, the ore from which alumina is extracted, is the basic feedstock to the aluminium industry. Mineable deposits occur largely in tropical regions where particular geological and climatic conditions have combined to create a favourable environment for enrichment of various hydrated aluminium oxides. Bauxite deposits in Iran can be divided spatially and temporally into three age-groups: Permo-Triassic deposits in northwestern Iran (e.g., Calagari and Abedini, ); Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic deposits in northern Iran (e.g., Rouzbeh-Kargar, ) and in some parts of the ZSFMB; and Cretaceous deposits in the ZSFMB.
